Running Clubs are not just for fast runners!
I highly recommend joining a local running club. From my experience with multiple clubs, my only regret is not having joined one sooner.
Benefits of Joining a Local Running Club:
- Meet other runners in your area
- Weekly track workouts
- Group runs for club members
- Participate in club sponsored races
- Volunteer to help at races
- Club sponsored training groups for upcoming Marathons,…
My Experience:
I used to run alone for years simply because I enjoyed it. Running gave me a sense of accomplishment and made me feel better. I ran three or four times a week at a steady pace and entered a few 5K races. While I could start strong, I often ran out of energy before reaching the finish line.
At my son’s suggestion, I joined a local running club with weekly track workouts. Initially, I was a bit intimidated by the experienced runners who had completed marathons and ultras. Before the workout, the coach would explain the session and divide runners into groups based on their expected 5K pace: 5-minute milers, 6-7 minute milers, 8-9 minute milers, and 10+ minute milers.
Running with a group at a similar pace pushed me to maintain speed. The camaraderie and encouragement from fellow runners, even those passing by with a “Good work!” shout, kept me motivated to run faster than I did on my own.
After my first track workout, I was eager to return the following week. Knowing that, I made sure to keep up with my personal runs during the week to stay prepared for track workouts.
